Peg Giffels on Twitter

Peg's email on using Twitter to promote your non-profit

For your viewing pleasure: link below to the recording and presentation materials for You're All a Twitter, an informative 1.5 hour webinar offered earlier this week by NTEN.

My main take-aways from attending the Webinar, listening for how Twitter could be useful to us:

  • Twitter can be a way to listen: monitor tweets on a sector or issue. Like your own personal newspaper (Maybe good for our sector-specific fundraising?)
  • Twitter can help build buzz:  Let people know about your campaign or event. Ask them to retweet it back out for a networking effect (Maybe good for Innovations Award 2010?)
  • Nonprofits on Twitter need to consider content and tone appropriate for the organization. Is it more of a personal or an organizational voice?
  • Also consider choices when setting up the account, for example: org or individual as the account name (affects search results), generic or personal contact email. See Defenders (of Wildlife) or Operation Smile for examples of an organizational voice and approach.
  • To follow nonprofits, google for the Twitter Nonprofit Pack, a list of nonprofits on Twitter and where to find them
  • Tips for measuring reach and impact: 1) use a service like bit.ly to create links because it allows you to track click throughs, 2) track how many retweets are made by your followers, 3) watch the number of followers over time and check for growth (an app like twittercounter.com can help)

Also, if you're just trying to figure out the whole Twitter thing there's a great 3-minute video introduction available at Common Craft: Twitter in Plain English
